Under the general supervision of the Special Investigator Supervisor, performs statewide, national, and international investigations of highly complex nature involving multiple criminal offenses, working with a high degree of independence. Reviews allegations, complaints or other information to determine criminal offenses that may have been committed. Conducts investigations, including but not limited to theft, fraud, embezzlement, forgery, conspiracy, fraudulent schemes, political corruption, etc.
Confers with prosecuting attorneys regarding progress of investigations, quality of case files and evidence, drafts subpoenas, warrants, etc. Prepares affidavits to obtain search warrants, arrest warrants, wiretaps, physical characteristic court orders. Individuals who have served honorably as a peace officer in Arizona and their certification as a peace officer has lapsed, or served in another state or federal agency, may be eligible to gain Arizona POST certification through Waiver Testing in lieu of attending an Arizona Peace Officer basic course at an academy.
Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) is required. Background check and in-state travel is required.
This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures. The State of Arizona supports a flexible work culture, including remote work programs. All work, including remote work, should be performed within Arizona unless an exception is authorized in advance.
This position is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive.
Job DutiesReview information and documents; analyze data, plan case strategy, maintain case files and evidence; prepare case reports.
Interview victims, witnesses and suspects in person or by phone. Travel as required, including state, interstate and international travel that may require overnight stays. Engage in undercover investigation operations, conduct surveillance of case suspects, and coordinate investigative activity with local, state and federal agencies.
Prepare and serve search warrants; conduct searches; seize and secure evidence. Serve arrest warrants; physically arrest and book suspects into jail.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)Knowledge of:
- Pertinent State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations.
- Modern law enforcement methods, best practices and procedures.
- Search and Seizure, rules of evidence and custody of prisoners.
- Defensive tactics.
- First Aid, CPR.
- Court systems, procedures and protocols.
- Activity reporting and accounting procedures established for the work system.
- Principles of report writing.
- Have previously served as a certified peace officer in Arizona, another state, or federal agency, and meet all minimum qualifications for certification as an Arizona Peace Officer.
Skills in:
- Interpreting relevant State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations.
- Eliciting factual information and drawing valid conclusions.
- Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with staff and the public.
- Use and care of firearms.
- Operate police equipment in emergency situations.
- Exercise discretion in use of force.
- Verbal and written communication; writing clear and concise reports.

- Have completed the basic and advanced training comparable to the Arizona basic course.
