Illinois Casualty Company is growing, and we have an opportunity for a Litigation Counsel to join one of the leading providers of insurance protection for the food and beverage industry.
Under the direction of the Director of Litigation, the Litigation Counsel oversees the investigation and handling of litigated claims files. The role requires sound evaluation of coverage, liability, and damages. The Litigation Counsel will also determine whether cases should be tried or settled and will drive the negotiation of fair and equitable settlements. The position is responsible for overseeing and managing outside counsel with respect to the representation of the Company and its insureds in litigation and monitoring and managing legal expenses, and reporting.
This position is supported by a Litigation Paralegal and Paralegal and may serve on interdepartmental project teams or committees.
- Evaluating coverage, liability, and damages for files in litigation, performing legal research as necessary
- Assigning, directing, and controlling outside counsel in the representation of the Company and its insureds
- Establishing appropriate and timely claim reserves from information obtained through evaluation of assigned claim files; reviewing and updating reserves as needed until claims are concluded
- Preparing and presenting cases in various meetings with management
- Participating in settlement negotiations, including pre-trial conferences and mediation, requesting settlement authority as needed
- Scrutinizing legal bills to ensure consistency with Company requirements
- Additional duties as assigned
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited school
- Licensure in any state with ability to gain In-House License for Illinois (as required by ll)
- Experience in law firm or corporate law environment preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in statutory application and tort law defense preferred
- Experience with property and casualty liability preferred
- Ability to read, classify, analyze, interpret, and summarize complex and highly technical information, legal documents, and legal authorities
- Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Proven organizational and time management skills
- Team oriented with ability to work in collaboration with both legal and business partners
- Ability to communicate and provide legal guidance to a diverse audience in a clear and concise manner
- Intermediate level proficiency in on-line legal research sites Westlaw, Lexis, and/or other on-line legal research services
- Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point
- Ability to demonstrate the highest level of ethical behavior, integrity, initiative, and resilience
- Must be a licensed driver and maintain a valid driver’s license in the state of residence
