Staff Counsel II

Overview

AmTrust Financial Services, Inc., a fast-growing commercial insurance company, has an immediate need for an Attorney with general liability experience to join our Southern California Staff Counsel office. The position partners with AmTrust's insureds and claims professionals to deliver the best possible result in general liability, construction defect and property damage lawsuits. A flexible location can be based in our Irvine office or can be remote working from your home.

• Independently represent the Insured before the assigned Court and present witnesses and evidence on litigated claims.
• Analyze complex legal and factual issues, conduct extensive and well-reasoned legal research, and independently develop and present defense strategies on behalf of the Insured.
• Prepare pleadings, written discovery, motions, and briefs in support of defense strategies.
• Prepare for, attend and handle all activities related to full trial and/or appeals, as assigned.
• Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to clients and claims professionals on legal and factual issues.
• Use independent judgment, research, litigation and analytical skills to support case strategy.
• Assist in developing training materials and presenting seminars for the Claim Department.
• Work with the Claim Department and Litigation Department on special projects related to the practice or line of business as needed.
• Communicate with the Court, witnesses, opposing counsel and clients in a manner consistent with established office procedures and the Code of Professional Conduct.
• Be responsible for the prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assigned cases.
• Keep current with market trends and demands; attend continuing legal education seminars to maintain a high level of professional expertise.
• Perform any other functionally related duties as assigned.

• JD from an ABA-approved school and license to practice in California.
• General liability defense litigation experience.
• Excellent knowledge of civil procedure, rules of evidence and strong verbal and written skills.
• Extensive deposition and alternative dispute resolution experience a must; trial experience preferred.
• Ability to handle cases in all the counties of Southern California.

• Multi-state Bar admittance.
• Experience with Team Connect legal software and dictation.
• Experience with the supervision and development of more junior attorneys.

The salary range for this role is $130K - $175K per year. This range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in California. Base pay offered may vary depending on, but not limited to, education, experience, skills, geographic location, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics. This range may be modified in the future.
