The Legal Aid Society’s Civil Practice seeks an experienced and talented lawyer with a deep commitment to public interest practice and policy. The role is within the Housing Justice Unit – Tenant Defense, where the Housing Justice Program engages in both eviction defense and affirmative litigation, representing tenants at trial and appellate levels.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise, mentor, and train staff attorneys and paralegals.
  • Maintain a high standard of representation and client service.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Housing, Housing Coordinators, and the benefits and grants management teams on all aspects of the housing practice.
  • Participate in structural and strategic planning for the benefits work within the housing practice of the Brooklyn Neighborhood Office.
  • Identify needs and resources, and participate in management team responsibilities to meet those needs.
  • Coordinate intake and represent clients in local, state, and federal administrative and court proceedings.
  • Develop and maintain community support and relationships with community‑based organizations, advocates, government agencies, elected officials, and the courts.
  • Reinforce and maintain staff accountability.
  • Analyze legal issues, develop strategy, and supervise implementation of legal strategies under the direction of the Director of Housing and the Director of Government Benefits.
  • Conduct community education, training, and outreach and promote the work of the office, the Housing Practice, and the Civil Practice.
  • Represent the Civil Practice and Legal Aid in the community.
  • Conduct off‑site intake, including during evening hours as needed.
Team Development and Supervision
  • Schedule employee hours, assign work, approve time off and remote work schedule requests following LAS policy and procedures.
  • Attend management meetings, participate in management trainings, and utilize current employment policies, practices and guidance as provided by management and Human Resources.
  • Conduct management and supervision practices that affirmatively support equity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Supervise direct reports in setting performance standards, providing routine feedback and coaching, and issuing disciplinary action as needed.
  • Identify and provide training and development opportunities and ensure mandatory trainings are completed.
Professional Development And Other Duties As Assigned
  • Participate in continuous professional development.
  • Continuously learn about forms of bias in the workplace and demonstrate affirmative behaviors that support an inclusive work environment.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Admission to the NYS Bar and willingness to apply for admission to the federal courts (S.D.N.Y., E.D.N.Y., Second Circuit) as necessary.
  • Minimum of three years of legal practice.
  • Minimum of one year of supervisory and management experience (or relevant leadership experience).
  • Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience conducting trainings.

  • Excellent research, writing, analytical, organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as manage staff attorneys and paralegal case handlers.
  • Experience in government benefits.
  • Experience litigating in various judicial and administrative forums.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience in public interest law and civil legal services, addressing fundamental issues of poverty and justice.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to exploring alternative approaches for legal practice.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team model.
  • Experience working in a fast‑paced environment.
