Manager, Staff Counsel – Minneapolis, MN (HYBRID)

Join GEICO as a Manager, Staff Counsel in Minneapolis, MN. This hybrid role manages staff counsel office activities related to defense of lawsuits against GEICO insureds in liability suits, and represents GEICO in subrogation, Uninsured Motorist (UM), Underinsured Motorist (UIM), and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) suits or arbitrations filed in Minnesota courts.

$144,525–$225,500 per year

• Interview and approve job applicants; conduct and review associate performance appraisals; initiate or approve salary adjustments, performance ratings, and other personnel changes; counsel associates and take disciplinary action or terminate employment as appropriate.
• Manage subordinates in all activities related to the defense of lawsuits and against GEICO insureds in liability cases, and on behalf of GEICO in UM/UIM, PIP, and subrogation suits.
• Represent GEICO insureds in liability cases, UM/UIM, and PIP suits filed in courts of limited and unlimited jurisdiction.
• Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda; render opinions on liability, damage, and value as requested by the Claims Department; prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery; defend all assigned matters by trial, arbitration, or mediation; meet deadlines and appear in court and other scheduled matters.
• Train and supervise attorneys, assisting them as first and second chair counsel and observing attorneys at trials and arbitrations; monitor bar requirements and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) compliance; review and provide feedback on file quality.
• Assist the Senior Managing Attorney and department with special projects as requested.
• Travel to attend trials, hearings, arbitrations, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.
• Review office reports and implement changes to improve office results, including file handling practices.

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
• Licensed in good standing to practice law in the state of Minnesota and maintain mandatory CLE requirements.
• Minimum of 7 years of litigation experience, including insurance defense or personal injury.
• Management experience.

Hybrid schedule; require onsite presence in the Minnesota Staff Counsel office.

Annual salary range: $144,525 – $225,500. Final offer based on experience, education, and market considerations.
