Job Description

The General Litigation Division seeks an experienced attorney to defend the City in complex federal court litigation challenging City policies and programs. The NYC Law Department’s General Litigation Division handles cases that challenge important City programs in diverse areas including education, health care, public assistance benefits, prison conditions, foster care, freedom of information, campaign finance, and election law. Division attorneys appear in both State and federal court.

Many cases are brought as class actions in federal court, raising complex and novel issues of statutory and constitutional construction. Division lawyers are responsible for their own caseloads, handling court conferences, oral arguments, discovery, legal papers, and hearings.

After orientation, attorneys may choose to work remotely on a limited basis or participate in a Citywide pilot program allowing two set days of remote work per week, subject to division approval and operational needs. In-person responsibilities, such as court appearances or client meetings, require attendance on designated remote work days.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must be graduates of an ABA-accredited law school, admitted and in good standing with the NYS bar, and eligible for immediate admission to the SDNY and EDNY. Ideal candidates should have substantial litigation experience, excellent organizational, legal writing, analytical, interpersonal skills, and strong judgment. A commitment to public service and the Law Department’s core values is essential.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness programs may be available. Residency in NYC is not required.

Additional Information

The City of New York is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and a harassment-free workplace. Salary range: $87,550.00 – $.
