Overview
This remote position is based in the Sacramento or East Bay California area with weekly field travel. The Senior Production Underwriter - Workers' Compensation role involves leading the development and management of strategic relationships with insurance agencies to drive profitable new business growth and ensure strong retention of existing accounts within an assigned territory. The underwriter evaluates, analyzes, and underwrites complex workers’ compensation risks—ranging from $75,000 to $500,000 in premium—exercising sound judgment within established authority levels.
Serves as a primary liaison between agencies and internal partners and contributes to the design and execution of the territory’s strategic agency plan, aligning agency performance with organizational goals.

- Calculates, prepares and develops premium quotations using corporate underwriting guidelines within the letter of authority.
- Determines underwriting eligibility for prospective policyholders and develops pricing for new business, renewals, and endorsements.
- Analyzes and reviews prospective accounts for insurability and accepts or rejects within authority levels.
- Develops and manages agency relationships and agency plans in cooperation with other staff.
- Addresses agents’ and policyholders’ concerns/needs; supports new business development, profitability and retention within the territory.
- Explains and emphasizes the benefits of workers’ compensation products and services to customers.
- Works with internal departments to resolve problems and maintain company relations.
- Participates on special committees and task forces as needed; interprets and develops territory reports; prepares periodic reports.
- Develops schedules for large account service plans with claims, loss control, premium audit, and other departments as needed.
- Mentors and guides other team members (e.g., Business Development Consultants) and supports regional goal development.
- Represents the company at trade associations and exhibitions to promote products; conducts annual agency audits and coordinates rate review processes.
- Leads in the planning and execution of a territory’s strategic agency plan and ensures alignment with organizational goals.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, insurance or a related field. MBA or other advanced degree is preferred; relevant experience may substitute for education.
- Five (5) years of experience in an insurance organization with demonstrated knowledge in underwriting, marketing, loss prevention, auditing or related areas; workers’ compensation or P&C experience required.
- Certification or progress toward certifications is highly preferred and encouraged.

Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of jurisdictional workers’ compensation laws and ability to apply audit procedures and processes.
- Ability to exercise advanced judgment in evaluating pricing within corporate underwriting guidelines; capable of managing agency relationships and making sound underwriting decisions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with agents, policyholders and internal customers.
- Strong analytical skills to assess territory, pricing, exposure and corrective actions; ability to manage data and meet changing customer needs.
- Effective time management, organization, and prioritization abilities; independent decision-making capability.
- Knowledge of occupational classification codes, loss ratios, claims histories, retention plans, and scheduled rating related to workers’ compensation.
- Ability to explain value proposition as a carrier and to present ideas and reports clearly.
Other Qualifications
- Ability to work remotely with travel as required; valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record; relocation may be necessary.
- Strong leadership and collaboration skills; willingness to mentor others and contribute to regional goals.
