Underwriting Specialist - Life Science (Hybrid or Remote) role at Intact Insurance Specialty Solutions.

This position underwrites and manages a book of highly complex, specialty accounts within broad authority levels. Focus is typically on new business production and large account management. The role may be based in the San Francisco, CA office on a hybrid schedule or remote in the West, Pacific Northwest or Southwest territories of the United States.

• Maximizes opportunities for underwriting profitable new and renewal business, leveraging relationships, product knowledge and underwriting acumen. Develops and maintains an active target account list and manages financial performance of the assigned territory, including loss ratio, premium plans, and commission targets.
• Underwrites a book of business and manages underwriting quality and book management. Executes underwriting strategy, performs self-audits of new and renewal business, and ensures well-documented approvals and compliance with standards and authorities.
• Demonstrates a strong understanding of exposures and coverage issues. Makes underwriting decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks within broad authority, and implements decisions in compliance with state laws.
• Develops working relationships with producers to promote growth and profitability, identifies gaps in coverage or services, and collaborates with other departments (claims, actuary, risk control) to service accounts.
• Regularly travels to key producers/accounts and participates in agency planning, marketing meetings and industry events to position the business for the future.
• Gathers and analyzes competitor information and producer reports to support rate reviews and pricing decisions. Works with underwriting staff on marketing, pricing, products and systems.
• Provides training and mentoring to less experienced underwriters and maintains knowledge of regulatory and legal environments.

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
• Minimum 5-7 years of Life Science underwriting experience.
• Professional insurance designation preferred.

Typical base salary range for this position is $115,000 – $162,000, based on location, experience and skillset. For candidates located in San Francisco, CA and the New York City metro area, the base salary range is $145,000 - $169,000.
