AboutThe Role
The National Security business in Gloucester is growing. You will work with a range of national‑security clients to deliver real‑impact solutions and support the community through tech engagement programs.
What You Could Be Doing For UsAs a Site Reliability Engineer you will shift traditional operations into software‑centric solutions. Your focus will be on automation, so that manual operations are limited to no more than half of your time. You will collaborate with product teams, instill best design practices, and drive architectural resilience.
Core Role Accountabilities- Support and maintain essential services that support core mission applications, proactively enhancing availability, performance, and stability.
- Find innovative, automated solutions to problems rather than performing repetitive work. You will never spend more than 50% of your time on support tasks.
- Instrument applications lacking sufficient monitoring, using the data to demonstrate daily improvements.
- Understand the relationship between software and infrastructure to maximise scalability and resilience.
- Participate in the wider Dev Ops/SRE community within the organisation.
- Experience in Java and web technologies (JavaScript, HTML)
- Familiarity with database technologies such as Elastic and MongoDB
- Proficiency with Linux and Windows command lines (Bash, Power Shell)
- Hands‑on experience with cloud infrastructures such as AWS, Azure, or Open Stack
- Experience using deployment tools like Chef or Puppet
- Expertise in monitoring large systems using ELK stack
- Agile scrum experience and corresponding tooling (Jira)
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting application issues that result in service outages
- Strong troubleshooting skills across multiple stack layers
- Understanding of ITIL terminology
- Experience with containerisation and micro‑services (Docker)
- Experience extending and improving open‑source software
- Familiarity with automation test frameworks such as Selenium
- Awareness of emerging technology trends and ability to adopt new tools
