Instructional Technology Manager (Campus Only)
Instructional Technology Manager is a leader for IT professionals who support the instructional aspects of the academic mission at UC Santa Cruz. The manager oversees key academic systems, collaborates across units, and drives strategy for instructional technology.
Key Responsibilities- Service Management and Strategy (40%): drive strategic thinking about instructional products and services; manage multiple services including road‑mapping, design, build, delivery, budget, and operations; coordinate practices, standards, and strategy across multiple products; conduct presentations to all levels in the organization; lead service‑specific meetings; manage vendor relationships; ensure compliance with information security, FERPA, ADA, and other regulations.
- Operations and Financial Management (25%): recommend and implement operations and budgets; build and maintain financial models; plan and assure adherence to budgets and schedules; develop policies and procedures; monitor products and services from initiation through delivery; provide guidance and consultation to improve service delivery.
- Personnel Management (20%): oversee and lead a department of professional staff; motivate staff, provide feedback, evaluate performance, and provide leadership; recommend hiring, promotions, salary actions, terminations; support professional development and career growth.
- Collaboration and Governance (15%): collaborate with IT governance groups, Academic Affairs, DRC, Registrar, VPDUE, and Faculty Senate committees; review new and existing IT products and services; conduct customer research; partner with Instructional Spaces Manager; work with peer managers and Service Desk to develop effective organization and team structure.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience and training.
- Experience leading and managing technical teams or projects.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical topics to varied audiences.
- Deep understanding of higher education instructional technology, including configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and problem resolution.
- Effective interpersonal and management skills, including recruiting, retaining staff, providing constructive feedback, and motivating others.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Knowledge of digital accessibility standards (WCAG, Section 508) and universal design for learning principles, applied to instructional technology selection, configuration, and support.
- Broad working knowledge of application deployment and programming development functions.
- Experience in leading change management activities across the institution.
- Ability to create and maintain accurate, useful, and accessible documentation for technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Compliance with policies and regulations including information security, FERPA, and ADA.
- Advanced degree (master’s, doctorate) in a related area.
- Experience working with procurement, business offices, and vendors to negotiate and manage contracts, service quality, costs, and regulatory compliance.
- Position eligible for 100% remote work; campus presence preferred but not required.
- Required to pass a pre‑employment criminal history background check and the employment misconduct disclosure process.
- Must comply with the University of California vaccination policy.
- Requires adherence to the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and related confidentiality safeguards.
Full‑time, Fixed 100 % time, 40 hours per week, Monday‑Friday day shift.
LocationUC Santa Cruz Main Campus; remote work eligible.
