Salary
:
Paid at Wawanesa, the salary for this role is determined with consideration to various factors including work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the range: $110,000 - $130,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Wawanesa offers a hybrid work environment that offers flexibility to our employees in balancing in‑office (2 days per week OR 15 hours per week in a Wawanesa office) and remote work. You may work from any of the following locations:

Job Overview

The Advanced Analytics Exploration team consists of actuarial analysts and machine learning engineers who build and deploy predictive models that support decision-making across the enterprise, helping Wawanesa deliver smarter, faster, and more impactful solutions.

The Machine Learning Engineer role is responsible for solving business problems and discovering business insights using structured and unstructured data, statistics, visualization and advanced machine learning techniques, and communicating findings of analysis to technical and business audiences.

You’ll work closely with teams across the organization including pricing, reserving, claims, and underwriting to solve diverse business problems using advanced techniques such as machine learning and large language models.

Job Responsibilities
  • Understand and translate business and functional needs into scalable machine learning and AI modelling workflows.
  • Perform exploratory analysis techniques to generate insights for business units and senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with Machine Learning Operations and other Technology teams to implement embeddable workflows for use in production environments.
  • Conduct independent research with new tools, algorithms and techniques in machine learning/AI and work to implement them in the organization.
  • Ensures adherence to performance standards and compliance to data security and model governance requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in software engineering, data science or computer science or a related quantitative field [or equivalent work experience] is required. An advanced degree in a related quantitative field is preferred.
  • Understanding of probability and statistical models.
  • Proficiency in machine learning algorithms and large language models.
  • Experience in code reproducibility and version control.
  • Strong programming skills with Python and SQL.
