Lead Product Engineer

About This Role  Areto Labs is a small startup. This means you’ll get to do the full range of engineering work for a fast paced, growing company. We need someone who loves doing the doing–with a passion for coding, and an interest in owning the end to end product. The role requires rolling up your sleeves and getting deep into the weeds, then rolling down your sleeves and working with the executive team to think strategically, and then back again.
What You ll Do   Own all technical decisions, architecture, and engineering outcomes across the organization. You ll be the technical authority who defines our standards, chooses our tools, and charts our technical roadmap.
Contribute directly to the codebase regularly, setting a high technical bar for code quality, maintainability, testing, and architectural design.
Design and build robust, scalable systems that can grow with our business. You ll make critical decisions about infrastructure, data architecture, and technical stack while keeping future needs in mind.
Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues across integrated systems, ensuring seamless interoperability between cloud platforms, third-party services, and containerized environments (GCP, Docker, etc).
Partner closely with the Head of Product to translate business requirements into technical solutions, leading features from concept through production release.
Establish and refine our development processes, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and incident response to ensure reliability and velocity.
Use tools like Claude Code and Git Hub Copilot to maximize development efficiency, while reducing repetitive tasks and technical debt.
What We re Looking For   6+ years of software engineering experience with at least 1-2 years in technical leadership roles
Strong full-stack development skills with expertise in Python
Proven experience designing and building scalable systems and distributed architectures
Deep knowledge of cloud platforms (GCP preferred) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
Track record of making sound technical decisions in resource-constrained environments
Strong communication skills and ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
Comfort with ambiguity and ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship at this time.
Nice To Have   Experience scaling systems from early stage to high growth
Familiarity with content moderation domain or event-driven architecture
Experience or strong interest in working with machine learning, AI and intelligent systems. We already have an AI/ML specialist, so this would not be part of your main responsibilities.
