Job Title: MS SQL DBA
Location: Remote (Utah or Western U.S.)
Job-Type: Contract
Salary Range: $125K – $150K
Position Overview: We are seeking an experienced MS SQL Database Administrator to support and optimize our on-prem Microsoft SQL Server environment while partnering on the buildout of a new Azure-based data warehouse. This role will focus heavily on performance tuning, high availability (AAG clusters), and cross-functional collaboration with Data Engineering, Analytics, and Application Engineering teams.
This position will be part of a team with will work closely with an eastern US based DBA and must be located in the Western U.S. to provide time zone coverage and operational support.
Duties & Responsibilities- Administer, monitor, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments (primarily on-prem).
- Lead performance tuning efforts (query optimization, indexing strategy, execution plans, resource utilization).
- Manage backups, restores, patching, upgrades, and database security.
- Support and optimize Always On Availability Groups (AAG) and clustering configurations.
- Partner with the Data team to support the buildout of a new Azure-based data warehouse.
- Assist in architecting data movement and storage strategies across on-prem and Azure environments.
- Provide guidance on Azure SQL and cloud database best practices (preferred).
- Work with Data Engineers to design and implement CI/CD pipelines for database changes.
- Collaborate with Application Engineers to improve how data is moved, stored, and reported.
- Support the Data Analytics team, including understanding Power BI data models and reporting needs.
- Share knowledge and provide backup coverage for the East Coast DBA.
- Manage daily operational tasks, monitoring, and incident response.
- Participate in after-hours support as needed for maintenance or critical issues.
- Ensure database environments align with security, reliability, and enterprise standards.
- Strong experience administering Microsoft SQL Server in on-prem environments.
- Demonstrated expertise in performance tuning and query optimization.
- Experience managing Always On Availability Groups (AAG) and clustering.
- Solid understanding of backup/recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies.
- Experience collaborating with engineering and analytics teams.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally.
- Azure SQL or Azure DBA experience.
- Experience supporting or building a cloud-based data warehouse.
- Familiarity with CI/CD processes for database deployments.
- Understanding of Power BI data structures and reporting workflows.
