Overview
The Mainframe DB2 Database Administrator is responsible for administering, optimizing, and supporting DB2 for z/OS environments. This role focuses on database installation, performance tuning, security, automation, and disaster recovery while collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure stable and efficient database operations.
Responsibilities- Install, configure, and manage DB2 subsystems, buffer pools, and storage groups.
- Monitor DB2 performance and implement tuning and optimization measures.
- Optimize SQL queries and indexing strategies.
- Analyze workloads and adjust system parameters for improved efficiency.
- Implement and manage backup and recovery procedures.
- Develop, test, and maintain disaster recovery strategies.
- Manage database security, user access controls, and authorization policies.
- Ensure compliance with data governance, audit, and security requirements.
- Automate routine DBA tasks using scripting and automation tools.
- Use monitoring tools to proactively detect and resolve database issues.
- Collaborate with application developers, system programmers, and infrastructure teams.
- Provide support during deployments, upgrades, and troubleshooting activities.
- Maintain documentation for database configurations, procedures, and standards.
- Define and enforce database standards and best practices.
Skills and Qualifications
- Strong experience with DB2 for z/OS across multiple versions.
- Proficiency in JCL, TSO/ISPF, VSAM, and DB2 utilities.
- Familiarity with mainframe tools including SMP/E and RACF.
- Knowledge of DB2 connectivity with CICS, IMS, and IBM MQ.
- Experience with DB2 DDF and distributed/remote connectivity.
- Hands-on experience with performance tuning, backup, recovery, and automation.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong communication and collaboration abilities.
- Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
- Extensive hands-on experience in DB2 database administration on z/OS.
- Proven background in performance tuning, disaster recovery planning, and automation.
- IBM Certified Database Administrator – DB2 for z/OS preferred.
