Job Summary

Responsible for the reliable and secure operation of the People Soft Student Administration suite and associated third party software components. Acts as primary technical resource and system designer. Implements and supports application software and other third-party software as needed. Provides ongoing support, including application tuning, implementing upgrades and fixes, and maintains software for 7x24 availability. Develops policies and procedures to ensure consistent system architecture and application design, and to promote high quality, maintainable application components.

Functions
  • Serves as analyst and lead programmer for the implementation and support of portions of the People Soft applications. May act as Technical Lead for one or more functional modules.
  • Establishes administrative and technical design standards for application developers and technical support staff to ensure the performance reliability, auditability, and maintainability of the People Soft environment.
  • Leads/participates in group reviews for testing plans, documentation, and configuration.
  • Leads technical reviews to ensure that application design decisions meet the long-term objectives of the technical architecture.
  • Ensures that conversion data mapping and from old systems to People Soft software follows principles of sound data management.
  • Serves as the primary technical contact with software vendors for system upgrades, fixes, and problem resolution.
  • Acts as a technical resource for the Project Team(s).
  • Adapts and configures software to meet the needs of user offices.
  • Develops testing plans and conducts testing for installation and upgrades of People Soft and other system software.
  • Provides training in the use of database tools, application development tools, and reporting tools.
  • Provides Tier II Help Desk support primarily through Service Now; respond to end-user questions from students, faculty, academic staff, and functional area staff.
  • Writes documentation as needed; records test results, business processes, problem definition and resolution.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field with more than five (5) years of related experience.
  • Experience working with and supporting administrative information systems applications.
  • Experience with data administration, application design, and analysis.
  • Experience directing the work of others in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Manage multiple projects.
    • Learn new technologies and software quickly, without formal training.
    • Meet deadlines and work independently.
    • Communicate well verbally and in writing.
    • Work well in team environment.
  • Experience working with large-scale databases such as Oracle.
  • Extensive programming experience in either a client/server development environment (e.g., People Soft, Oracle Development Tools, Powerbuilder) or a major programming language (e.g., Java, Python).
Preferred Qualifications

Experience supervising technical staff.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a standard office or indoor university environment and involves minimal physical exertion.

Work Schedule and Work Arrangement
  • Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5pm
  • This position has the opportunity for a remote work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where the employee’s work location is to work from a site other than the UMass Amherst campus. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.

Pay Grade: PSSAP Grade 29
