POSITION SUMMARY:Microsoft Exchange Subject Matter Expert (SME)
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Microsoft Exchange Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support a government customer at the Dahlgren site. This position was created as part of a newly signed contract modification and is focused on executing a major Microsoft Exchange Server migration and upgrade to Exchange Server SE within a secure, classified environment.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in Exchange architecture, security, and performance optimization within DoD or other classified government networks, along with strong documentation skills aligned with government compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and execute a large-scale Microsoft Exchange Server migration and upgrade to Exchange Server SE
- Design, implement, and optimize Exchange architecture in secure government environments (e.g., JWICS)
- Apply and validate Exchange security controls, including STIGs and RMF requirements
- Optimize and tune Exchange server performance and email client functionality
- Develop and maintain government-required technical documentation and artifacts
- Perform post-upgrade activities including patching, validation, and system hardening
- Utilize Power Shell scripting to automate administrative and operational tasks
- Participate in technical discussions, design reviews, and upgrade walkthroughs with stakeholders
- Support limited onsite activities as required; perform most documentation and maintenance tasks remotely after upgrade completion
- 7–10 years of hands‑on experience with Microsoft Exchange, preferably supporting DoD or classified systems
- Deep expertise in Microsoft Exchange architecture, implementation, and upgrades
- In‑depth knowledge of government security requirements and compliance standards, including:
- STIGs
- RMF
- Proven experience optimizing and tuning Exchange environments
- Strong Power Shell scripting proficiency
- Demonstrated experience producing formal technical documentation required for government programs
- Ability to clearly explain technical decisions and walk through an Exchange upgrade approach
- Experience supporting JWICS or other high‑side classified networks
- Familiarity with Ansible and/or Python (nice to have, not required)
- Security+
- IAT Level II (DoD 8140)
- MCSE or MCSA (Microsoft Exchange or related)
- Candidates should be prepared to discuss certifications and technical experience in detail
- Pre‑qualifying technical questions will be used consistently to assess Exchange expertise
- Documentation experience and familiarity with government compliance artifacts are key screening factors

Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate or annual salary only, unless otherwise stated.
