Associate Support Engineer

This is a globally remote role. This position offers the opportunity to build a career with Canonical and support the technical needs of customers leveraging Ubuntu and open‑source products. The role is ideal for a hands‑on engineer eager to learn, passionate about Linux and open‑source technologies, and ready to work with some of the best people in the industry.
Responsibilities- Provide technical support for users from remote home offices via telephone, email, and web.
- Take ownership of new cases, qualify and resolve them within the service level agreement (SLA).
- Advocate for internal customers, keeping them updated in a timely manner.
- Contribute new knowledge‑base articles and maintain existing articles to share lessons learned.
- Draft and distribute technical notices for internal and external communication.
- Prioritise work to address the most important and urgent tasks first.
- Stay current on products and services as they evolve.
- Understand the Ubuntu development process to set realistic expectations for customers.
- Maintain regular communication with the team, locally and remotely.
- Identify and propose opportunities to improve service quality.
- Participate in a regular weekend working rotation.
- Exceptional academic record from high school and university.
- Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about an alternative path. Preferred majors:
Computer Science, MIS, Electrical Engineering, etc. - Confidence to speak up respectfully, exchange feedback, and share ideas.
- Track record of going above and beyond expectations.
- Experience with Linux troubleshooting (collecting logs, stack traces, fine‑tuning configuration files).
- Hands‑on knowledge or experience with two or more of:
- Linux server administration
- Programming fundamentals in any language (bash, Perl, Ruby, JavaScript, C/C++, Go)
- Networking (bonding, firewalling, bridging, switching, network‑file‑system tuning, MTU issues, etc.)
- Virtualization / Cloud computing concepts (provisioning, monitoring, orchestration, etc.)
- Ability to learn quickly, thrive on change, and handle the pressure of a customer‑facing role.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Appreciative of diversity, polite, and effective in a multicultural, multi‑national organisation.
- Result‑oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
- Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long.
- Experience supporting virtualised environments (KVM, Virtual Box, VMWare).
- Experience with other open‑source desktop technologies.
- Active contribution to open‑source projects, forums, or code.
