About the Team and Role

The data infrastructure team is responsible for data lake, pipelines, distributed query engines, experimentation framework, data dashboards, and visualization tools. Our data ecosystem uses open‑source technologies such as Kafka, Hive, Trino, Spark, and Airflow, along with a few in‑house systems. As a member of our team you will design and scale existing infrastructure, improve reliability, create new tooling, and promote proper data usage across the company.

We are looking for someone who is excited to optimize, enhance, or redesign our data architecture and pipelines for the next generation of data initiatives.

Project Highlights

• Migrated a decade of Redshift usage to Trino at Quora.
• Revamped the Spark ecosystem at Quora.
• Adopted Trino’s fault‑tolerant execution mode at Trino Summit 2023.

• Identify and implement improvements to system’s cost efficiency, reducing data storage and processing costs.
• Design and implement scalable and efficient data architectures, meeting the needs of data scientists, engineers, and business partners.
• Own structured and unstructured data models at a high level and act as a data consultant for partner teams.
• Champion best practices on system usage and maintain high‑quality code standards.
• Participate in the team’s on‑call rotation, solving timely reliability incidents.

• Availability for meetings and communication during Quora’s coordination hours (Mon‑Fri: 9am‑3pm Pacific Time).
• 2‑5 years of experience in data infrastructure.
• Flexibility to work on and own different data engineering systems aligned with company priorities.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL query design.
• Experience with big data processing frameworks such as Hive, Spark, and Trino.
• Experience building high‑velocity/high‑volume data‑intensive applications.
• Experience with SQL/No
  
  SQL data stores and data lake operations.

• Experience in performance optimization or cost‑saving projects.
• Hands‑on experience with AWS technologies such as S3, EC2, RDS, EKS, or Apache Iceberg.
• Positive team player with strong interpersonal skills.
