Cryptography Subject Matter Expert

Job Overview

We are seeking a Cryptographer for a 6‑month (extendable) remote contract position starting in January (or February if necessary).

This position is to help design, shape, and implement a new Crypto program which includes PKI (Public Key Infrastructure), HSM (Hardware Security Module), post‑quantum cryptography, and more. You will act as the go‑to person for encryption, key management (PKI, HSMs), algorithms (RSA, ECC), and standards (FIPS, NIST) to protect data, collaborating with engineers, architects, and product teams to ensure secure, compliant, and usable security features across systems.

You will analyze threats, test security, manage crypto life cycles, and guide the adoption of new technologies like Post‑Quantum Cryptography (PQC).

• Serve as the primary advisor on applied cryptography, offering deep insights into primitives, protocols, and security models.
• Evaluate cryptographic code (SDKs, libraries) for vulnerabilities, inefficiencies, and compliance gaps.
• Ensure adherence to regulations (FIPS 140-2/3, PCI‑DSS, GDPR) and industry standards.
• Oversee the lifecycle of cryptographic keys, including hardware security modules (HSMs).
• Work with engineers, architects, and product managers on secure feature development.
• Identify weaknesses, test new theories, and stay ahead of emerging threats (e.g., PQC).
• Handle urgent security incidents and provide technical support for crypto‑related issues.
• Strong knowledge of encryption algorithms, digital signatures, PKI, key management, and cryptographic protocols.
• Experience with federal and enterprise security standards (NIST, FIPS).
• Proficiency in coding, testing, and optimizing cryptographic implementations.
• Familiarity with agile development and product management.
• Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
