We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
The RoleWe are creating a brand‑new team within the Human Resources Support and Advice Unit (HRSAU), dedicated to a new way of managing attendance across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. This is an exciting opportunity to play a central role in shaping how we support managers and staff to deliver consistent, fair and person‑centred attendance processes. As an Assistant HR Advisor Attendance Management, you’ll provide high‑quality, responsive and professional advice to managers, helping them navigate all aspects of the NHS Scotland Attendance Policy.
You will guide and coach managers through formal stages, support decision‑making, attend review meetings, manage absence‑related focus groups, and help ensure our attendance approach is efficient, compassionate, and aligned with the values of the NHS.
These posts are agile, requiring flexibility to work across a range of NHSGGC locations as needs arise, covering a large geographical area. You will be empowered to manage your diary day‑to‑day, though regular travel will be required. We welcome candidates who can meet this need using any suitable and reliable mode of transport. We work flexibly, allowing a great work‑life balance while providing timely support to managers and staff.
The HR team has an excellent base in Gartnavel, and we'll support you to work from home or any other NHSGGC location.
This is a rare chance to join a newly established attendance team and contribute to a refreshed, modern, and people‑centred approach to managing attendance. You’ll build deep expertise, influence positive outcomes for staff and services, and be part of a collaborative HR community committed to continual improvement and supporting high‑quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities- Assist and advise managers in reducing and maintaining acceptable absence levels in accordance with the NHS Scotland Workforce Attendance policy. Support managers by providing advice and guidance, attendance at formal review meetings, conduct hearings and reviewing management statements of case. Attend and participate in Occupational Health case conferences as required.
- Advise on and where appropriate support informal resolutions to employee relations matters including conduct, grievance, bullying and harassment, capability and performance issues.
- Support managers to investigate non‑complex matters in connection with conduct and grievance procedures. This includes participation in investigations, assisting with and reviewing management statements of case and attending hearings in support of the manager.
- Support the manager in the lead up to ill‑health retirements with submission of forms and liaising with payroll; referring to Human Resources Advisor for guidance where necessary.
- CIPD membership with a Certificate in People Practice, or strong practical HR experience gained in a large or complex organisation.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and influencing skills, with a commitment to delivering a high‑quality, customer‑focused service.
- A solid understanding of employment legislation and HR policies, with the ability to advise and coach managers in attendance‑related decisions.
- Strong organisational and time‑management skills, particularly in managing a large, varied, complex, and fast‑moving caseload.
- Good IT capability, including MS Office and HR information systems, with confidence in using data to support clear, evidence‑based advice.
