Payroll Process Consultant

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Payroll Process Consultant to process, stabilize, audit, and optimize payroll operations for a complex U.S. workforce. This role is ideal for a detail‑oriented expert who thrives in fast-paced environments, excels at digging into processes, and enjoys building best‑practice systems for long-term scalability. The Payroll Process Consultant will play a critical role in end‑to‑end payroll execution, auditing, documentation, and strategic process improvement.

  • Schedule: Flexible, full-time hours. Monday-Friday, onsite
  • Overtime: Flexible; periods of high intensity expected during audits or process changes.
  • Location: Onsite in Denver strongly preferred. Exceptional Payroll Process Consultant candidates may be considered for remote work following an initial onsite integration period. Hybrid options available for top talent.
  • Reporting Structure: Reports to senior payroll and operations leadership, with daily interaction across payroll, HR, finance, and systems stakeholders.
  • Decision Makers: Hiring decisions require approval from payroll leadership with budget consultation from finance/IT.
Key Responsibilities & Time Allocation 1. Payroll Processing – 50%

The Payroll Process Consultant will manage end‑to‑end biweekly and monthly U.S. payroll in ADP, resolving discrepancies, ensuring compliance, and executing accurate, timely processing across multi‑state employee populations.

2. System & Process Auditing – 25%

Conduct immediate audits of status changes, duplicate entries, tax and benefit integrations, retro activity, and data accuracy. Identify root causes and implement corrective actions.

3. Documentation & SOP Development – 15%

Document workflows, create standard operating procedures, map processes, and train internal team members to close knowledge gaps and prevent recurring errors.

4. Process Improvement & Strategy – 10%

Advise leadership on long-term structure, team capacity, systems capabilities, and strategic improvements. The Payroll Process Consultant will evaluate current-state workflows and recommend future-state design.

Minimum Qualifications Must Have
  • Advanced ADP Workforce Now expertise (U.S., multi‑state).
  • 5–10 years of payroll experience.
  • Payroll certifications strongly preferred (CPP or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated audit, project, and error-resolution background.
  • Proven success improving payroll processes and documentation.
  • Strong Excel capability, including lookups, pivot tables, and error-checking.
Nice to Have
  • Canadian payroll exposure.
  • Experience with benefits system integrations.
  • Background in systems implementation or optimization projects.
Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal Payroll Process Consultant is proactive, analytical, collaborative, and low‑ego — someone who can challenge existing processes professionally while educating team members. The culture is supportive and collaborative, though the team is currently overstretched and eager for an expert who can bring structure and relief. Dress code onsite is professional casual.

Role Benefits
  • High-impact role stabilizing and improving payroll operations for a large U.S. group within a global organization.
  • Opportunity to audit, fix, and redesign payroll processes from the ground up.
  • Direct access to senior executives and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Openness to consulting or freelance project structures for highly qualified experts.

This role is a significant opportunity for an experienced Payroll Process Consultant who wants to make an immediate and lasting impact on payroll accuracy, systems effectiveness, and organizational efficiency.
