- Rotating workflow schedule to cover a variety of duties including inventory, dispensing, phones (inbound and outbound), shipping, & data entry
- Specialty pharmacy with some retail, and mail order dispensing
Assists in drug preparation, storage, distribution, and inventory management within a variety of pharmacy environments. It is recommended this entry‑level position participates in and completes Avera Health’s Pharmacy Technician Education Program to prepare for Certified Pharmacy Technician examination. Upon successful Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination, or other approved certifying body, the technician‑in‑training will be promoted into the role of Pharmacy Technician.
Avera’s Pharmacy Technician Education Program consists of combined didactic, simulation, and experiential learning activities. Avera requires a two‑year employment commitment upon completion of the Pharmacy Technician Education Program. Technician‑in‑Training works under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.
- Recommend participation in and completion of Avera Pharmacy Technician Education Program to become PTCB certified and registered as a Pharmacy Technician.
- Under pharmacist supervision, accurately input and/or prepare labels and packages for inpatient or outpatient medication orders and prescriptions to maintain an efficient, accurate, and high‑quality medication delivery system.
- Demonstrate proficient knowledge of medications, calculations, regulations, and regulatory limitations, personal protective equipment, and promotion of patient safety to ensure high‑quality patient care and compliance.
- Communicate effectively with nursing staff, physicians, customers, co‑workers, supervisor and management and participate in interdepartmental work groups and committees as assigned to promote high‑quality communication and prevent patient harm.
- Perform clerical functions such as, but not limited to, billing, patient demographics and pharmacy inventory to promote an efficient medication distribution system.
- Assist with the collection and maintenance of records as needed by the Pharmacy Department and applicable accreditations such as Utilization Review Accreditation Commission, Joint Commission, NIOSH, OSHA, or other accreditations as may be required by law, practice standards, or departmental policy to maintain compliance with accreditation entities.
- May be responsible for assisting customers on the phone or in person.
- May run reports and use the automated dispensing system, conduct monthly inspections of medication stocks in assigned areas, and assist with inventory to prevent drug shortages or excesses.
- Proficient in compounding practices, e.g., botox, chemotherapy.
