Description

Under supervision at the health district, day‑to‑day activities of the fellows include, but are not limited to, planning, developing, and conducting epidemiologic investigations, surveillance, outreach, and interventions limited in scope and/or complexity to determine the causes of diseases and implementing methods of disease control. Fellow duties also include collecting, analyzing, and interpreting statistical data and preparing epidemiologic reports. The applied epidemiology experience is supplemented by competency‑based professional development trainings and camaraderie‑building programming.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in implementing timely disease intervention strategies to decrease prevalence of communicable diseases.
  • Design, implement, and maintain disease surveillance systems and best practices.
  • Cross‑train with other district departments.
  • Attend weekly epidemiology team meetings.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret statistical data, and prepare epidemiologic reports.
  • Conduct engagement and outreach with community members and/or stakeholders affected by or interested in disease outbreaks or data.
  • Assist with the development of policies and procedures for disease control programs.
  • Provide training, technical assistance, and consultative services regarding epidemiology and disease control.
  • Serve as a point of contact for various personnel regarding moderately complex epidemiologic issues.
  • Perform additional duties as required, supporting section operations.
Additional Job Details

Hired into the Rollins Epidemiology Fellows Program, fellows serve as early‑career MPH‑level epidemiologists for a two‑year term within one of Georgia’s 18 local health districts or at the Georgia Department of Public Health. This position is located at District 3‑5 DeKalb Public Health in Decatur, GA. Up to 2–3 days per week of remote work is possible, negotiated with the health district supervisor.

To successfully complete and graduate from the Rollins Epidemiology Fellowship, fellows are minimally expected to complete an oral presentation, a surveillance evaluation/quality improvement project, and a significant data analysis project over the course of two years. Fellows are expected to work on projects and activities related to seven core competencies:

Example Projects
  • Health of DeKalb: a comprehensive report published regularly by the agency that provides information on county demographics and data on a wide variety of health topics affecting DeKalb County residents. Fellows will contribute by pulling and analyzing data, creating data visualizations, and working with other internal teams to produce a finished product.
  • West Nile Virus case and mosquito testing geospatial analysis: each year DeKalb Public Health’s Environmental Health team conducts mosquito testing to identify locations within the county where West Nile Virus positive (WNV+) mosquitos are found. Fellows will perform a geospatial analysis of these two datasets to compare the locations of WNV+ mosquito pools and human cases over time.
