We are looking for a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) who has experience working with patients with communication & swallowing difficulties to join our community service. This team provides input to patients, over a very small geographical area, with a variety of conditions including progressive neurological diseases, stroke and dementia and many skills are transferrable from working in a range of other settings.
Mainduties of the job
The successful candidate will work in a small team of highly experienced SLTs, as well as closely alongside Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and primary care colleagues in both an outpatient & community setting. You will have responsibility for caseload management of those referred into the service and deliver appropriate, varied, therapeutic interventions to achieve agreed goals. Our team have close working relationships with those in other community and hospital teams.
There will be regular opportunities to work with our Band 8a clinical lead to contribute to service development & explore new ways of working. We run an exemplary Multidisciplinary Parkinsons Disease Clinic for those in the early diagnosis stage, with the support of an on-site Consultant Geriatrician & Nurse specialist. We are also proud to be able to offer Lee Silverman Voice Therapy (LSVT
- Loud) and associated training as well as group sessions supported by our SLT Assistant.
One of the benefits of a community service running within an acute hospital setting is the streamlined access to both videofluoroscopy and FEES clinics. In-house support can be provided to upskill in these areas and all of our team are encouraged participate in a variety of continuing professional development activities.

Job responsibilitiesThis role will enable you to use your own initiative to meet the different needs of patients, as well as being based in a team of experienced, specialist and friendly Speech and Language Therapy team. The office space is shared with SLTs skilled in ENT/ Voice diagnoses and Head & Neck cancer- a speciality for which QVH is internationally renowned. We pride ourselves on sharing knowledge between our specialties & working closely as a small team.
This is a part-time role and the working pattern is negotiable. We can also offer flexible working such as some working from home if required.
Qualifications- Evidence of relevant postgraduate education and training in advanced dysphagia (level 6 RCSLT EDSCF)
- Post-graduate education and experience in Neuro SLT and other relevant specialist courses.
- Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy (RSCLT)
- Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification
- Have undertaken training and completed RCSLT competencies in VFS/ FEES
- Substantial SLT experience within community and domiciliary environments or strong understanding of transferrable skillset from alternative settings.
- Experience in managing a clinical caseload ensuring that clinical governance and quality assurance standards are met.
- Staff and student supervision
- Experience of developing and delivering training
- Have undertaken a clinical audit
- Experience in leadership.
- Experience of pathway and protocol development
- Highly specialist knowledge and experience of assessment and treatment techniques with progressive neurological conditions.
- Highly developed knowledge of national policies and procedures a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions (relevant to the patient group)
- Highly developed knowledge of neurology and the consequences of impairment as related to the patient group
- Proven experience in developing, organising and presenting staff training programmes related to specialist field individually and to groups.
