Position: NICU Dietitian Position Summary

The Neonatal Intensive Care Registered Dietitian is responsible for assessing the nutritional status of NICU neonates, developing nutrition care plans, and implementing Medical Nutrition Therapy alongside an interdisciplinary team. The role also trains staff, participates in performance improvement, and provides inpatient care to other patient populations as needed.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Complete recorded training in perinatal and neonatal nutrition.
  • Screen patients to identify nutritional interventions.
  • Integrate clinical, anthropometric, laboratory, social, psychological, and nutrition data into assessments and modify food/nutrient intake and route of administration.
  • Document nutrition care in the medical record and validate charges for nutrition services.
  • Develop and implement individualized nutrition care plans for neonates and infant special needs, and other populations as required.
  • Evaluate outcomes and adjust plans based on continuous monitoring of patient needs.
  • Provide counseling to patients, families, and significant others regarding diet needs, restrictions, and drug interactions; evaluate learning and adjust as necessary.
  • Initiate, develop, deliver, and evaluate nutrition education programs and in‑services for food service employees, other health‑care staff, and the community.
  • Attend and actively participate in department meetings.
  • Apply education materials and teaching techniques appropriate to the age and developmental stage of patients.
  • Maintain availability via Tiger Text at all times unless another trained neonatal dietitian is covering duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree or 10 years of work experience in the field.
  • Registered Dietitian/Licensed Dietitian registered in the state of Texas.
  • Proof of specialized neonatal nutrition training.
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association upon hire or within 90 days.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Typing and basic computer skills desired.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications preferred.
  • Successful completion of the pre‑employment assessment.
Physical and Sensory Requirements
  • Read and write English.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, physicians, support agencies, vendors, and others.
  • Remain calm under stress.
  • Perform bending, kneeling, crouching, twisting, lifting (10‑30 lbs), grasping, fine hand/eye coordination, pushing, pulling, prolonged standing or sitting.
  • Demonstrate quantitative/mathematical abilities (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, metric measurement).
  • Tolerate cold exposure in refrigerators/freezers, fumes from chemicals, cooking odors, gases, and patient room odors.
  • Work in environments with potential hazards such as cuts from knives or meat slicers and burns from cooking/heating surfaces.
