Overview
We are seeking a trainee Biomedical Scientist who holds or is working towards an IBMS accredited Biomedical Science degree or equivalent (must have approved degree assessment from IBMS). This is an opportunity to join us in our new purpose built hospital with views across the countryside, in the Blood Science laboratory as a Biomedical Scientist.
Candidates will be enthusiastic, outgoing, motivated and innovative, with good organisational skills and well developed communication skills. The Blood Sciences section provides a clinical laboratory service to NHS Dumfries & Galloway 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Dumfries & Galloway has a population of 150,000 people with approximately 300,000 samples analysed annually in Biochemistry, 230,000 samples in Haematology and 17,000 samples in Blood Transfusion.
Responsibilities- Rotate in all areas of the laboratory including Biochemistry Automation, Biochemistry Manual, Haematology Automation (FBC and Coagulation), Special Investigations, Morphology and Blood Transfusion.
- Become proficient in a wide range of analytical equipment following Departmental SOPs.
- Applications are welcomed from individuals who are working towards or have completed an IBMS accredited degree or equivalent in Biomedical Science.
- If completing top up modules, ensure the original degree is assessed by the IBMS. If successful, candidates will begin departmental training and work towards completion of the IBMS Certificate of Competence.
- During training, pay progression follows applicable terms (Band 5 Annex U and Annex 21 as described in the original job posting).
- Band 5 during training with reduced pay until degree completion; after Certificate of Competence, progression to Band 6 after post-qualification requirements are met.
- Pay percentages during training:
Year 1 65%, Year 2 70%, Year 3 75% of pay band maximum.
This post requires the successful applicant to obtain Standard Disclosure Clearance.
