The Senior Architectural Medical Planner is a senior-level subject matter expert in healthcare planning and design, responsible for leading the programming, planning, and clinical integration of complex healthcare facilities. This role bridges clinical operations and architectural design, translating healthcare delivery models into efficient, compliant, and patient-centered environments.

Based in our Seattle office, this position works closely with a transdisciplinary team of architects, designers, planners, and project managers. The ideal candidate is comfortable working across multiple projects at varying scales and brings strong regional healthcare experience in Washington and Oregon, with California experience preferred.

This role is critical to shaping healthcare environments that directly impact patient outcomes, staff effectiveness, and long-term operational success. The Senior Architectural Medical Planner helps align design excellence with real-world healthcare delivery across the region. This is a hybrid role with an expectation of being in the office a minimum of two to three days per week, which should be on one of the firm’s three anchor days:
Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday.

Responsibilities
  • Lead medical planning efforts for hospitals, ambulatory care centers, specialty clinics, diagnostic facilities, and complex renovations (behavioral health and recovery project experience strongly preferred)
  • Develop functional and space programs, adjacency diagrams, stacking plans, and test fits
  • Translate clinical workflows, staffing models, and patient flow into clear, effective spatial solutions
  • Conduct clinical user interviews, planning workshops, and visioning sessions to inform design direction
  • Partner closely with clinicians and healthcare stakeholders to understand care delivery models, equipment needs, and operational constraints
  • Ensure alignment between architectural design, clinical operations, and patient experience
  • Evaluate efficiency, safety, infection control, and staff workflow throughout planning and design
  • Serve as the medical planning lead within integrated, transdisciplinary project teams
  • Collaborate with project managers, designers, and technical team members across all phases of design and documentation
  • Review drawings and specifications for alignment with programmatic, operational, and regulatory requirements
  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level staff, helping grow the next generation of medical planners
What you bring to be successful
  • Professional degree in Architecture, Medical Planning, Interior Architecture, or a related field
  • 15+ years of healthcare design experience, including 8+ years of focused medical planning
  • Advanced proficiency in Revit (required)
  • Proven experience planning complex healthcare environments, including renovations, behavioral health facilities, imaging suites, and laboratories
  • Strong understanding of healthcare operations, clinical workflows, and regulatory frameworks
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating with regulatory agencies and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), including Departments of Health (DOH) and the Oregon Health Authority (OHA)
  • Licensed Architect and/or NCIDQ certification preferred
  • Professional certification in architecture/design (e.g., AIA, NCIDQ) and/or project management (e.g., PMP) preferred
  • Experience working with large healthcare systems or academic medical centers
  • Behavioral health and complex renovation project experience
  • Familiarity with Lean healthcare principles and/or evidence-based design
