Role on the Team

The Neurocritical Care Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) will participate in new and ongoing studies related to acute neurological emergencies in adult patients with acute traumatic brain injury and cardiac arrest. These studies include interacting with acutely ill patients and their legally authorized representatives (LARs) in the Emergency Department or Intensive Care Units. The CRC will collaborate closely with specialists from Departments including Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery, Trauma Surgery, and Neurology.

This position requires the ability to work independently and to create and maintain interprofessional relationships with provider teams at UCI Health. Strong interpersonal skills to communicate with subjects, their LARs, and the clinical teams providing care are essential. The CRC will obtain consent from LARs for acutely ill patients and will possess persistence and flexibility to assure ongoing subject cooperation.

Responsibilities include chart review, interdisciplinary care meetings, regulatory compliance, grant administration, education of interdisciplinary teams on study protocols, and database management in accordance with Good Clinical Practices (GCP) for sponsored clinical trials. The CRC will develop and maintain internal standard operating procedures (SOPs) in line with University policies and procedures. Occasionally, weekend or overnight hours may be required to enroll patients;

the CRC may also take call and perform remote work during flexible hours for tasks such as patient screening, telephone encounters, and education development.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Critical thinking in compiling and reviewing data from various sources.
  • Ability to perform scientific research, including evaluating information and preparing concise, well‑organized reports and correspondence.
  • Experience creating and maintaining databases using Excel or other relational databases.
  • Skill in interacting with persons of diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Research experience, including IRB, HIPAA, and other regulatory documents, study coordination, and familiarity with GCP and ethical conduct of research.
  • High integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to work well in a constantly changing environment.
  • Multitasking to meet deadlines, despite interruptions.
  • Competence in the essential duties required for the position.
  • Cooperative teamwork within a small office environment.
  • HS graduation and sufficient experience demonstrated for the role.
  • At least 2 years of related work coordination in Brain Injury with a Bachelor of Arts/Science or equivalent experience.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of university and medical center organizations, policies, procedures, and forms.
  • Background in EMT, emergency, critical care, or trauma nursing.
