Overview
University of Iowa Health Care’s Professional Coding Division is seeking a Coding Representative to assign ICD-10-CM codes and CPT codes for professional facility outpatient services and professional hospital inpatient services. The role supports a culture of service excellence and requires accurate, clear communication with clinic personnel, physicians, and other health care professionals while upholding patient rights and confidentiality.
Responsibilities- Review medical records to assign CPT/HCPCS and/or ICD-10-CM diagnosis and procedure codes in accordance with internal policies, coding guidelines, and regulations.
- Monitor compliance and coding standards to ensure full and accurate reimbursement in compliance with HIPAA and applicable rules.
- Communicate with physicians, residents, and staff when additional information is needed or when documentation does not support the recommended coded service.
- Meet departmental targets regarding volume and accuracy of codes assigned.
- Adopt and incorporate initiatives that improve compliance and reduce risk for the institution.
- Assist in providing and analyzing reports related to documentation issues, coding patterns, physician productivity, reimbursement trends, etc.
- Participate in internal coding and development training as needed.
- Knowledge of professional/physician coding rules; experience with ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, NCCI, NCD, LCD, and outpatient coding guidelines.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Detail-oriented with strong time management and prioritization abilities.
- Ability to handle complex and ambiguous situations with minimal supervision.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and/or experience.
- Certifications:
RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CPC-A, or equivalent (AHIMA or AAPC).
- At least one year of medical coding and/or billing experience.
- Knowledge of coding and billing for teaching settings; familiarity with HIPAA and CMS requirements.
- Experience with Epic; familiarity with UI Health Care’s Patient Financial Services functions.
- Ability to work independently in remote settings with strong organization, communication, and attention to detail.
This position is eligible for remote work; training may be onsite or via hybrid. Remote eligibility will be evaluated after training, with annual policy reviews and travel considerations as appropriate. Equipment provisions: onsite, hybrid, and remote options with monitor and laptop configurations as described by department policy.
Schedule, Pay & LocationSchedule: Monday–Friday, 5:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (full-time).
Pay Grade: 2B
Percent of Time: 100%
