Overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a Healthcare Assistant to join our Early Days in Custody Team (EDiC) at HMP Elmley.
The EDiC team will act with the following principles:
Holistic – a multi‑disciplinary approach drawing on expertise from the other teams within healthcare;
Curious – engaging patients with clinical curiosity and involving families/carers where possible;
Prioritising Safety – keeping prisoners safe by addressing immediate risks such as self‑harm, risk of death by suicide, and unmanaged substance misuse.
Our healthcare team has a real impact on promoting health and well‑being to those in prison and we pride ourselves on using skills and strategies that instil hope for patients’ future resettlement back into the community.
Role SummaryAs a Healthcare Assistant you will assist in the delivery of high‑quality nursing care to patients in prison with the support of a registered nurse. You will provide physical care according to a written care plan, including taking blood pressures, ECGs, other observations and wound care. You will actively engage patients in holistic, needs‑led care that considers physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual needs, and promote health and wellbeing through health promotion activities.
Responsibilities- Take blood pressures, ECGs and other observations; perform basic wound care.
- Carry out phlebotomy and monitor blood glucose.
- Assess patients using NEWS2 and record weight and other measurements.
- Assist in emergency call‑outs, be second checker on medication rounds, order and maintain stock.
- Ensure treatment rooms are clean, tidy and well‑stocked; maintain patient confidentiality and security.
- Document care accurately in Systm One and adhere to all organisational and prison policies and procedures.
- Contribute to risk assessment and management; report incidents and breaches as required.
- Communicate effectively with patients, carers and other professionals; support inter‑agency working.
- Hospital or primary care experience.
- Competent at taking blood pressure, ECGs and other observations.
- Knowledge of wound care.
- Ability to work under National Security Vetting and provide proof of right to work, identity and address history.

- National Security Vetting is mandatory.
- Proof of right to work, valid photographic address history.
- UK passport holders who have lived abroad for more than six months in the last three years must provide a certificate of good conduct or an overseas police check.
- Applicants with less than five years UK address history must provide a police certificate in English.
- Non‑UK passport holders must supply the correct right‑to‑work documentation and a Home Office share code.
