The Medical Laboratory Scientist – Traveler is responsible for performing high-complexity clinical laboratory testing while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and quality in patient diagnostic results. This role supports a hospital laboratory environment and adheres strictly to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and all applicable regulatory and safety standards. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical laboratory skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced clinical setting while maintaining patient confidentiality and quality standards.
Responsibilities- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, reporting, and record maintenance.
- Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures in accordance with department SOPs.
- Review, validate, and release patient test results.
- Ensure proficiency testing samples are processed in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety and quality guidelines.
- Perform and document quality control activities, calibrations, and maintenance.
- Identify testing issues, perform corrective actions, or escalate concerns to senior staff as required.
- Document corrective actions when test systems deviate from established performance standards.
- Report STAT and critical results according to departmental procedures.
- Maintain complete and accurate testing records.
- Ensure reagents and test kits are properly labeled with received, opened, and expiration dates.
- Participate in training, safety sessions, departmental meetings, and regulatory inspections as needed.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laboratory workspace.
- Perform other duties as assigned by laboratory leadership.
Education
- BS in Medical Technology preferred OR
- BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology OR
- Associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology OR
- Previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433
- Foreign-educated candidates must provide a credential evaluation from IERF
- U.S.
-educated candidates must provide original transcripts
Certifications & Licensure
- National certification as MT/MLT from ASCP or AMT (required or eligible)
- State licensure as required
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory experience
- High-complexity testing experience preferred
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of clinical laboratory testing principles.
- Knowledge of Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) processes.
- Ability to work with multiple laboratory and computer systems.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple procedures simultaneously.
- Excellent attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
- Hospital site requiring additional credentialing
- Onsite position; remote work not eligible
