Position: Lead Oncology Nurse Specialist - Children and Young People

Overview

Lead Oncology Nurse Specialist required to lead and shape outstanding cancer care for children and young people across Worcestershire, in partnership with Birmingham Children’s Hospital as part of a shared care model.

You will be the visible clinical leader and expert resource for CYP cancer and leukaemia care, coordinating journeys from first investigation and diagnosis through treatment, transition to adult services, or palliative care. You will champion evidence-based children’s cancer nursing, set standards, and coach a team to deliver safe, high-quality care across sites.

Main duties

Manage your own caseload with support from expert medical colleagues as an independent CYP oncology practitioner. Support chemotherapy clinics, including physical assessment prior to SACT and non-medical prescribing within scope and trust policy. Act as a role model to champion the best outcomes for patients, supporting families and staff, reinforcing quality with care pathways, service development, and research. Lead, inspire, and develop the CYP Oncology nursing team;

contribute to strategic review of clinical services as appropriate. Balance clinic and management responsibilities with effective job planning. Familiarity with infection prevention and control standards and escalation processes.

Prescribe Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) in line with Trust Non-Medical Prescribing Policy and in agreement with the Lead Cancer Nurse and Oncology/Haematology Team at the Principal Treatment Centre. Provide Non-Medical Authorization of Blood Components as per Trust policy. Lead day-to-day management of specialty services and ensure clinical sessions are covered by qualified nurses. Lead and develop service quality, safety, equity, efficiency, and effectiveness;

monitor adherence to national requirements; contribute to NICE guideline implementation where applicable.

Engage in education, training and development: act as an expert educational resource; participate in educational programmes; provide mentorship to postgraduate/advanced practice nurses and undergraduate students; contribute to resource and teaching packs; provide clinical supervision to promote reflective practice and skill development.

Clinical governance: maintain care pathways with regular audits; ensure policies and standards are followed; maintain quality documentation; lead and participate in audits and governance forums; ensure NICE guidelines are embedded; support Quality Strategy and risk management; promote learning culture and nursing audit mechanisms; contribute to policy development and risk assessments.

Qualifications and experience

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (NMC Part 1, Children)
  • Degree level education;
    Masters degree or equivalent management experience
  • Post-registration qualification in the area of clinical specialty; chemotherapy administration (SACT) qualification
  • Independent non-medical prescriber (NMP) with SACT prescribing
  • Teaching/mentoring qualification and CPD commitment
  • Experience as a CNS at a senior level in an acute hospital; autonomous role in oncology; experience leading staff; budgetary/clinical governance experience
  • Enhanced DBS clearance
  • UK professional registration in good standing

Desirable

  • Leadership course or equivalent
  • Health Promotion knowledge
  • Knowledge of audit/R&D, policy development, and change management
  • Experience in education/training packages for patients, carers and staff
Key knowledge and skills

Extensive knowledge of children’s oncology and complex treatment modalities; ability to influence multi-disciplinary practice; clinical credibility in chemotherapy and blood product administration; strong auditing/research engagement; mentoring and counselling skills; negotiation, delegation, and workload management; ability to work under time pressures and deliver to tight timescales; capability to provide clinical supervision.

Other requirements

Standard DBS checks; DBS and professional registration requirements; willingness to work county-wide; flexible/remote working as required. This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1975 and DBS checks as applicable.
