Position Summary
The Occupational Health Nurse will have responsibility for the management of employee illness/injury related absences, and support return to work processes. Working with the Director of Occupational Health & Safety, they will support the development, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of occupational health program initiatives and lead health promotion and wellness activities.
This is a Permanent, full-time position, based in Ontario. It is a hybrid role, mainly virtual with occasional travel.
Key Responsibilities- Disability Case Management
- Lead case management of employee absences and accommodation requests due to injury/illness
- Assess medical documentation, identify functional limitations, and support the development of appropriate modified duties and accommodations
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential health records in accordance with legislation, best practices, and organizational policy
- Act as a key point of contact for employees navigating the disability or accommodation process, ensuring clear, empathetic communication
- Liaise with benefits providers, healthcare providers, and internal stakeholders to ensure efficient and compliant case resolution
- Consulting with SE’s Occupational Health Physician as needed
- Leadership
- Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of occupational health and safety programs
- Contribute clinical expertise to occupational health and safety discussions, risk assessments, and policy development as needed
- Building and maintaining strong working relationships and collaborating effectively with internal and external stakeholders
- Stay up to date on industry best practices and regulatory changes related to occupational health and safety, and disability case management
- Leadership and participation in relevant organizational processes, consultation, and training
- All other reasonable duties as assigned
- Registered Nurse with current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree
- Occupational Health Nursing Diploma or Certificate/Canadian Nurses Association Certification in Occupational Health Nursing
- At least 5 years’ experience in occupational health and disability case management
- Strong working knowledge of relevant legislation including the Human Rights Code, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act, and workers’ compensation frameworks
- Expert level ability to independently manage employee injuries and illnesses, including assessment, documentation, coordination, and follow-up
- Excellent written and verbal skills, with the ability to build trust and communicate clearly with employees, unions, healthcare providers, leaders and workers’ compensation boards
- Ability to handle sensitive personal and medical information with professionalism, integrity and according to legal requirements
- Comfortable working in a dynamic environment with evolving program needs and legislation
- Ability to perform functions of the position with minimal supervision
- Exceptional multi-tasking, organization, and time management skills
- Strong analytical skills, critical thinking and attention to detail
- Strong experience working with MS Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams
- Demonstrated ability to quickly gain proficiency in the use of internal digital technology platforms, case management systems, and digital tools
- A vehicle and valid driver’s license with the ability to travel occasionally within Ontario
