Job Summary
This position will be coding for vascular surgery. Responsible for reviewing patient medical records after a visit and translating the information into codes that insurers use to process claims. Duties include confirming treatments with medical staff, identifying missing information and submitting information to insurers for reimbursement. Participate in peer review to ensure accuracy and timeliness. Resolve complex coding questions that arise from the team.
EssentialFunctions
- Evaluates medical record documentation and coding to optimize reimbursement by ensuring diagnostic and procedural codes accurately reflect outpatient visits and comply with legal standards.
- Interprets medical information such as diseases, symptoms, diagnostic descriptions, and procedures to assign the correct ICD‑10‑CM and CPT codes.
- Provides technical guidance to physicians and staff on resolving documentation or coding issues.
- Manages complex coding situations and supports peers through challenging questions.
- Peer reviews records management to ensure accuracy.
- Audits clinical documentation and coded data to validate that services rendered are supported for reimbursement.
- Researches, analyzes, recommends, and facilitates actions to correct discrepancies and prevent future coding errors.
- Identifies reportable elements, complications, and other procedures.
- Education:
High School Diploma or Equivalent required. - Experience:
Medical Coding Experience of 2‑3 years required. - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
In-depth knowledge of medical coding systems (ICD‑10, CPT, HCPCS) and application in hospital billing; strong understanding of coding guidelines, regulations, and best practices; excellent leadership and team management skills; strong communication and interpersonal skills; strong problem‑solving skills; ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
