Inpatient Coder II, HB Coding, Full-time, Days (Remote - Must reside in IL, IN, IA, WI, MO, OH, MI, or FL - Sign-on bonus eligible)
Northwestern Memorial Hospital is hiring a full‑time, day shift inpatient coder who works remotely from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Ohio, Michigan, or Florida.
CompensationThe hourly rate ranges from $28.14 to $40.80, with placement within the salary range based on experience, internal equity, and, where applicable, collective‑bargaining agreement guidelines.

- Assign ICD‑10‑CM and ICD‑10‑PCS codes to complex inpatient acute care discharges, typically averaging a Case Mix Index of 2.26.
- Determine Present on Admission (POA) values for all secondary diagnoses to support quality metrics.
- Review provider notes, clinical documentation nurse findings, and CADC software outputs to select appropriate codes.
- Validate and correct discharge dispositions that impact Medicare post‑acute reimbursement.
- Sequence ICD‑10‑CM codes within the top 24 fields using DRG/AVR/Elixhauser risk‑adjustment frameworks.
- Collaborate with CDI on approximately 45% of discharges regarding final MS or APR DRG and comorbidity diagnoses.
- Educate CDI staff on regulatory guidelines, Coding Clinics, and coding conventions.
- Write appeal letters responding to payor DRG downgrade notices.
- Resolve nosology messages, coding validation warnings, and errors.
- Meet established coding productivity and quality standards.
Required
- 3+ years of inpatient coding experience in an acute healthcare setting
- RHIA, RHIT, or CCS credential
- AHIMA membership
Preferred
- Associate’s degree in a related field
- RHIA or RHIT with CCS or CDIP/CCDS credential
- 4+ years of inpatient coding experience in a teaching hospital
