THE POSITION The Department of Environmental Protection seeks an Environmental Trainee within the Northeast Regional Office focused on environmental clean-up. You will participate in a comprehensive 12-month training program that includes enhanced supervision, formal education, and guided field inspections. Under the direction of the Water Quality Specialist Supervisor, your role will focus on Environmental Protection within the storage tank program. You will be tasked with various responsibilities throughout the Northeast Region to ensure compliance with the Commonwealth s storage tank regulations.

Your primary goal will be to support compliance efforts and perform inspections of regulated facilities to confirm their adherence to the Storage Tank Act and Chapter 245.

This position involves investigating complaints to assess potential violations of the Storage Tank Act, Chapter 245, or the PA Clean Streams Law, as well as overseeing regulated storage tank facilities to ensure they meet the Commonwealth’s standards. You will conduct inspections of both underground and above ground storage tank systems, engage in escalated enforcement actions when necessary, and deploy absorbent materials or construct interceptor trenches as required.

Additionally, you will collect water, air, and soil samples, input sample data into the SIS, review results, and communicate findings to property owners. Lastly, you will evaluate third-party inspection reports for completeness and compliance with the relevant regulations.

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
• Telework:
  You may have the opportunity to work from home part-time, 2 days per week. Telework requires a securely configured high-speed internet connection and an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you may report to the headquarters office in Wilkes-Barre. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. • Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
• A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

• This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
