About the role

Balfour Beatty is looking for an organised and detail‑driven Assistant Project Accountant to join our team on the Lower Thames Crossing project.

In this role, you’ll work closely with operational, commercial and finance colleagues to provide clear, timely financial information that supports decision‑making across the project. From payments and cost control to forecasting and reporting, you’ll help maintain the financial integrity of a complex programme while developing your career within a dynamic finance function.

What you ll be doing
  • Prepare and manage schedules for applications for payment, supporting timely and accurate submission
  • Partner with operational and commercial teams to ensure strong financial clarity and effective cost control
  • Assist with forecasting, budgeting and variance analysis to support informed decision‑making
  • Deliver accurate staff and agency cost reporting, including onboarding and related finance processes
  • Complete balance sheet reconciliations and monitor timesheet recovery issues
  • Provide clear, data‑driven insight and ad‑hoc analysis to support commercial performance
  • Track and monitor project expenditure, highlighting risks or variances promptly
  • Support continuous improvement across finance processes and reporting
  • Contribute to key finance governance activities and ensure high‑quality documentation
  • Play an active role in supporting a Zero Harm culture and living our Balfour Beatty values
Who we re looking for
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English, grade C or above.
  • Part‑qualified accountant (AAT/CIMA) or working towards qualification.
  • Experience in cost management, reporting and reconciliation.
  • Strong Excel capability and confidence analysing complex data.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Organised, deadline‑driven and able to take ownership of tasks.
  • Self‑starter with a proactive attitude to learning and development.
  • Strong attention to detail and disciplined approach to work.
  • Experience using ERP systems (Oracle advantageous).
  • Understanding of financial controls, processes and reporting standards.
