Job Summary

The Portfolio Manager is responsible for the ongoing management, monitoring, and performance of an active portfolio of loans. This role ensures borrowers remain successful throughout the life of the loan, provides early intervention when portfolio risks arise, and supports the organization’s financial sustainability and mission.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a portfolio of active loans, ensuring timely payments, covenant compliance, and ongoing borrower health.
  • Conduct regular portfolio reviews, analyze financial and operational performance, and identify early warning signs.
  • Maintain updated borrower records, financial statements, collateral documentation, and internal system data.
  • Prepare periodic portfolio reporting and risk summaries for leadership and committee review.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned borrowers, providing guidance, technical support, and relationship management.
  • Maintain strong communication and positive working relationships to support borrower success.
  • Coordinate with business development and underwriting teams to ensure smooth transitions from loan approval to servicing.
  • Manage the collections process for delinquent accounts, including borrower outreach, negotiation of payment plans, and follow-up contact.
  • Recommend and support workout strategies, modifications, or escalation actions when needed.
  • Track delinquency, non-performance, watchlist loans, and default trends within the portfolio.
  • Ensure servicing documentation meets internal policies, regulatory standards, and investor or grantor requirements.
  • Support annual reviews and reporting needed for audits, funder reports, and compliance tracking.
  • Participate in continuous improvement of servicing and risk management procedures.
  • Work closely with underwriting to share insights from borrower performance and inform future credit decisions.
  • Partner with outreach and technical assistance teams to connect borrowers with needed resources.
  • Provide feedback to leadership on portfolio trends, operational challenges, and systemic borrower needs.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, public administration, nonprofit management, or related field; or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience in lending, portfolio management, loan servicing, credit risk, or collections.
  • Demonstrated experience managing delinquent accounts, payment plans, or borrower remediation strategies.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial statements and performance trends.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and documentation quality.
  • Commitment to equitable access to financial opportunity and community-focused lending.
  • Experience working for a nonprofit lender, CDFI, community-based lender, or mission-driven financial organization.
  • Familiarity with small business or nonprofit financial models.
  • Knowledge of loan management systems, CRM tools, and portfolio reporting platforms.
