Overview
Liberty Mutual Surety™ is currently recruiting for a hybrid Senior Contract Surety Underwriter to join our Surety Plus Operation. This hybrid underwriting position will have dual roles for both our Small to Mid Contract Team as well as our Vista (funds administration, collateral & SBA) Team with time split between the two. As a Senior Surety Underwriter you will develop and underwrite profitable surety business, and service independent agents, brokers, and small to mid-sized contract accounts/SBA within an assigned territory.
Using your excellent relationship skills, you will build and maintain positive partnerships with our agents, brokers, and accounts as a trusted advisor and underwriting resource for our producers and customers. You will also use your business and financial acumen to perform primary credit underwriting and financial/risk analysis, provide recommendations, and make decisions on new and existing accounts. - Underwrite and negotiate accounts to maximize profitability while minimizing risk, including complex accounts based on level of responsibility. Conduct evaluations of a customer’s financial, technical, organizational, and management capacities, including experience and objectives, as well as character considerations.
- Manage the profitability and retention of an assigned book of business while developing the portfolio through strong relationships and active engagement with new and existing agents and brokers. May assist in developing the marketing plan.
- Perform analytical evaluations of financial statements on static and trend bases. Determine the present and historical financial position of accounts and monitor risk through analysis of quarterly statements and work-in-progress data as appropriate.
- Stay informed about Liberty Mutual Surety and Global Risk Solutions product lines and identify opportunities across with agents and brokers, leveraging domestic and global capabilities.
- Investigate, analyze, and manage underwriting, accounting, and workflow issues within the framework of Surety policies and procedures.
- Assess changes in business factors such as financial strength criteria, nature of work performed (inherent risk), data flow accuracy/timeliness, and exposure analyses. Coordinate with Home Office Underwriters and Field Management as needed.
- Assist in evaluating business continuity arrangements and funding mechanisms to prevent financial drain in the event of owner loss or other insurable events.
- Mentor more junior staff as appropriate.
- Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
- BA/BS in Business Administration or related field typically required.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience expected; typically 7+ years surety underwriting experience and/or equivalent surety-related business experience preferred.
- Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses in understandable written and/or oral directives for underwriting or training purposes.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills with agents, brokers, CPAs, bankers, attorneys, etc.
- Ability to comprehend complex technical underwriting issues and implement necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows.
- Demonstrated track record of business development.
There is a strong preference for the selected candidate to live within a commutable distance to one of our Northeast Surety offices (Boston, MA; Plymouth Meeting, PA; or New York, NY). The selected candidate must live in the Northeast Region of the US. If the selected candidate is within 50 miles of a Surety office, they must come into the office two days/week.
