Description Location

This position offers a hybrid working environment from our offices on 15th Street in downtown Washington, DC, near the White House. All DC-based staff are required to come into our office up to 3 days per week. Staff are given the flexibility of 2 days per week for remote work.

The National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) was formed in 1990 by national, regional, and local organizations to develop and harness the collective energies of community reinvestment organizations from across the country to increase the flow of private capital into traditionally underserved communities. NCRC has grown into an association of more than 600 community-based organizations that promote access to financial service sector products and services in order to create and sustain affordable housing, job development, and vibrant communities for America’s working families.

The Community Finance & Mobility Division of NCRC has a specific focus on advancing economic mobility for communities impacted by systemic inequality and historic disinvestment.

Position

Summary

NCRC CDF is seeking an Underwriting & Loan Service Specialist who is an exceptional multitasker, who is goal-oriented, and highly detailed. The Underwriting & Loan Service Specialist will oversee a loan inquiries from application through underwriting, funding, and post-closing activities, , and provide overall program support within the CDF’s lending programs

Essential Functions Loan Evaluation & Analysis
  • Review and analyze financial statements, tax returns, bank records, credit reports, and business plans
  • Assess borrower creditworthiness, repayment ability, and collateral value
  • Identify and assess risks, providing clear recommendations on credit decisions
Underwriting & Decision-Making
  • Prepare comprehensive credit memos with recommendations for approval, modification, or decline
  • Ensure loan requests comply with company policies, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate with loan officers, relationship managers, and credit committees during the decision-making process.
Risk Management & Compliance
  • Maintain adherence to lending regulations, compliance standards, and internal risk controls
  • Monitor industry trends, economic conditions, and portfolio performance to identify potential risks
  • Support periodic reviews of existing borrowers to ensure ongoing credit quality.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Work closely with sales, portfolio management, and operations teams to support business growth while maintaining credit quality.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions and rationale clearly and professionally to internal stakeholders.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to strengthen applications where appropriate.
Additional Responsibilities

Annual conference participation and support, and other duties as assigned by ED.

Requirements
  • Applied knowledge of underwriting fundamentals and standard industry practices
  • Understanding of financial principles and processes
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Ability to multitask and work under pressure to meet strict deadlines
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field
  • 3-5 years of underwriting or credit and risk analysis experience preferred
  • Experience working in a team environment for a financial, credit or lending institution
  • Experience with underwriting automation tools preferred
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook)
