Job SummaryThe Staff Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day accounting and financial record keeping for several agencies, schools or departments of the Archdiocese of St. Louis and ensures the accurate recording of financial transactions in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. This role assists with general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, month-end and year end close and the year end audit. The Staff Accounting reports to an accounting manager.
Job Responsibilities- Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare and release journal entries to the general ledger and all subsidiary application systems.
- Reviews information posted to subsidiary application systems prior to posting to the general ledger. Subsystems include accounts receivable, asset management and accounts payable.
- Reviews all accounts receivable and/or accounts payable batches for accuracy before they are processed.
- Prepares general ledger account reconciliations each month.
- Analyzes financial information detailing assets, liabilities, revenue and expenses, and prepares balance sheet, statement of activities, and other reports to summarize and interpret current and projected financial position for the agency director.
- Aids agencies, schools or departments with preparation of the annual budget and assists in related budget analysis.
- Builds relationships with agency, school or department leaders and attends board/finance meetings as needed.
- Prepares audit work papers and schedules in conjunction with the year-end audit.
- Prepares or assists in preparing special reports as needed related to grants, governmental and tax reporting.
- Work as part of a team, maintaining good relationships with peers and leaders.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
- Certified Public Accountant preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of related experience
- Proven capability in a similar role, including key processes, analytical skills and technical writing
- Verbal and written communication skills are important in interacting with a wide variety of colleagues
- Technical aptitude in Microsoft Office and other commonly used software
- Knowledge of Infor and/or Lawson accounting a plus
- Non-profit experience a plus
- Willingness to travel within the boundaries of the St. Louis Archdiocese to attend meetings at agencies, offices or schools
