Senior Tax Manager / Director of Tax (Hybrid) — Washington, D.C. Area

We are seeking a Senior Tax Manager or Director of Tax who brings deep technical tax expertise, strong client presence, and the leadership mindset to help us deliver an exceptional client experience every day.

Compensation: Negotiable; commensurate with experience
Experience Target: 10+ years (Senior Manager); ~15+ years (Director track)
What you’ll doOwn and review complex federal and multi-state filings across entity types, serve as a primary client tax liaison, and lead high-impact tax work including research, notices, audits, and special projects.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and/or review federal and multi-state tax returns, extensions, and estimated tax payments for:
- Individuals
- Corporations
- Partnerships
- Trusts
- Exempt organizations
- Conduct tax research and provide practical guidance to clients and internal stakeholders
- Resolve IRS and state/local tax notices and manage follow-through to completion
- Assist with federal, state, and local audits
, including documentation and auditor communication - Analyze and review financial statements to support accurate filings and planning
- Partner with senior accounting staff to ensure client needs are met with speed, accuracy, and professionalism
- Support special projects (e.g., process improvement, complex client matters, planning initiatives)
- Returns and deliverables are accurate, timely, and defensible under scrutiny
- Clients feel informed, supported, and confident in your guidance
- Tax issues (notices, audits, research questions) are handled decisively and documented well
- You elevate the team through clear communication, coaching, and process consistency
- Highly detail-oriented with strong organization and prioritization skills
- Ability to manage deadlines and multiple concurrent client deliverables
- Confident working independently while collaborating across levels and functions
- Strong analytical reasoning and structured problem-solving approach
- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills; strong client presence
- Demonstrated leadership capability (mentoring, reviewing, guiding execution)
- Microsoft Word and Excel (strong proficiency expected)
- Quick Books (Desktop & Online)
- Axcess Tax
- Bloomberg BNA (or similar tax research platforms)
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and/or Master’s degree in Taxation
- Tax experience: 10+ years required
- Director-level track: typically ~15+ years, with demonstrated leadership and review responsibilities
- Background preparing/reviewing returns across multiple entity types and multi-state complexity
Up to $210,000; commensurate with experience
