Financial Services provides all accounting services and financial reporting for UWinnipeg. The Senior Accountant is a full-time term position responsible for ensuring the accurate accounting, monitoring, and reporting of University financial transactions, including oversight of funding, expenditures, cash flows, and compliance with authorization, budget, and accounting standards. This position plays a key role in safeguarding the integrity of the general ledger and financial statements while supporting internal management, external stakeholders, and the University's legal and reporting obligations.
Responsibilities- Prepare, review, and post monthly journal entries to ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Perform and oversee monthly general ledger, intercompany, and investment entries resolving discrepancies on a timely basis.
- Track GIC activity and prepare, review and post quarterly accrued interest journal entries.
- Calculate and process required payments to the University of Winnipeg Student Association.
- Manage the month-end close process to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with internal financial policies and accounting standards.
- Respond to financial inquiries from the University community and provide support.
- Support the preparation of external financial reports for government and external stakeholders.
- Assist with the development of financial reports using Excel, Business Central, and Prophix.
- Provide guidance to departments in understanding and monitoring departmental financial reports.
- Review and approve journal entries for accuracy, compliance, and documentation support.
- Review operating and control accounts for anomalies and posting errors.
- Oversee the monthly reconciliation process for general ledger accounts by comparing balances in the GL to supporting documentation, investigating any discrepancies, and ensuring they are promptly resolved.
- Manage month-end process ensuring staff have posted all required entries on time, all accounts are balanced, and journal entries are compliant with internal financial policies.
- Prepare audit working papers, schedules, reconciliations, and financial analysis.
- Manage audit deliverables using the auditors' platform and respond to audit inquiries.
- Coordinate with staff to ensure audit requirements are completed on schedule.
- Assist with the implementation of accounting standard changes as required.
- Identify opportunities for improvements to financial processes, internal controls, and reporting efficiency.
- Develop and implement process improvement action plans in collaboration with leadership.
- Provide analytical insight to support management decision-making.
- Support implementation of Internal Audit recommendations.
- Provide backup support to the Senior Director as required.
- Participate in special projects as assigned.
- A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
- A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
- 5 years of directly related experience in an accounting services environment.
- Demonstrated experience in preparing consolidated financial statements and managing comprehensive reconciliations.
- Experience identifying and implementing financial reporting process improvements.
- Experience working in Higher Education or the Public Sector with knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) would be an asset.
- Knowledge of financial accounting principles.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to communicate complex financial data effectively to senior management and other stakeholders.
- Must have proficiency in the use of the MS Office Suite and Financial Accounting Software. Experience with MS Dynamics NAV or Business Central, Case Ware and/or Prophix would be an asset.
- Ability to make independent decisions within the policies and goals of the unit.
- Must be organized and have the ability to meet strict deadlines and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

The salary range for this position will be from $80,510 to $101,986 annually.
