The Opportunity

Mawer Investment Management is currently looking for an exceptional and experienced new member to join our Calgary team and continue to build on our successes in investment counselling with private clients in Canada. Responsible for business development, relationship management, portfolio oversight, and community representation, the successful candidate will help grow our private client and family office businesses.

The role of an Associate Investment Counsellor is a training role to eventually become an Investment Counsellor. The role will be mentored by an Investment Counsellor or two who will be the primary contact for helping groom and learn the business. The incumbent will expect to be a self-starter who has the internal drive to succeed.

This position reports to the Senior Manager of Individual Client Management.

Role Responsibilities

Portfolio Management

  • Develop, recommend, and execute investment strategies to achieve clients’ investment objectives
  • Apply holistic oversight, consolidated investment policy design, asset allocation, and asset location in client portfolios
  • Clearly communicate the firm’s investment strategies to clients, including their rationale, implications, and expected consequences
  • Comply with appropriate processes, policies, and regulations in performing assigned responsibilities
  • Assume responsibility for all aspects of client service and reporting, including compliance, quarterly investment commentary, quarterly reporting, and client review meetings
  • Coordinate all client requests with appropriate areas of the firm
  • Business Development

  • Develop strategic alliances, cultivate referrals, and build Mawer’s relationships and presence
  • Promote Mawer through active community networking

  • Planning

  • Build and update financial plans for Investment Counsellors to deliver to clients
  • Over time, take the lead in client planning conversations and support execution in coordination with the client’s key partners
  • Desired Qualifications

  • 4+ years of relevant experience
  • CFA designation / CIM designation
  • AR/AAR designation or the ability to be registered
  • Previous relationship management skills
  • Strong values and client centric mindset
  • Strong business development background with a growth and winning mindset
  • Previous planning experiences with clients
  • Strong external network of Centres of Influence
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Team player with a can-do mindset
  • Previous portfolio management skills would be an asset
  • CFP or PFP would be an asset
