Intern, R&D Graduate Summer - Advanced Thin Films & Processing, Onsite
We are seeking a Summer - R&D Graduate Intern to join our dynamic team!
ResponsibilitiesOn any given day, you may be called on to:
Plan and perform experiments involving sputter deposition, collect and analyze data with the goal of investigating how process parameters affect film stress, microstructure and mechanical performance.
Interact and collaborate with other inter-disciplinary research groups within Sandia National Laboratories to develop new combinatorial approaches to deposition and high-throughput film characterization techniques.
Publish or support the completion of a publication.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary RangeAt Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. QualificationsWe Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
- Earned bachelor's degree
- Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, asylees or refugees in the U.S.
Note:
If you have not yet started your graduate program, please apply to an undergraduate intern position.
- Pursuing a graduate degree in only of the following areas:
Materials Science and Engineering, Physics and Electrical Engineering - Experience with magnetron sputter deposition and/or other physical vapor deposition methods
- Experience with operating high vacuum pumping systems
- Experience with characterizing thin film microstructure and properties
- Ability to work well in a team environment, including strong verbal communication skills and ability to work with others

About Our TeamThe Advanced Thin Film Materials Department conducts collaborative leading-edge experimental R&D that enables the collaborative development of creative solutions involving advanced thin film materials for supporting Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings. Our Department's R&D advances the application of thin film materials with engineered mechanical, tribological, electrical and optical properties that impact Sandia's National Security Missions.
We partner with mission collaborators to help develop low volume production of materials for various applications and engage in leadership roles in the NNSA/DOE complex.
