The Center for Watershed Protection (CWP) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit that partners with communities to ensure clean water and healthy natural resources. For over 30 years, CWP has provided technical services and training, conducted applied research, and grown a strong membership network dedicated to advancing watershed protection practices nationwide.

CWP is seeking a self‑motivated professional with a strong technical foundation, excellent communication skills, and 5+ years of relevant experience to join our team as a Water Resources Engineer or Water Resources Professional. This is a fast‑paced position with opportunities to work on a wide variety of projects that improve watershed and stormwater practices across the country.

This is a remote position; however, the candidate should ideally be located within driving distance to the CWP office in Fulton, MD as occasional travel to the office as needed to facilitate communication and efficient work progress. The position also includes periodic fieldwork and travel (less than 10% annually).

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage projects while providing technical guidance and quality control to team members
  • Lead Projects with tasks including:
    • Green stormwater infrastructure design and retrofit solutions
    • Stormwater and flood analyses
    • Watershed assessment and planning projects
    • Site assessments for water quality and stormwater improvements
    • GIS mapping and analysis
    • Watershed and stormwater plans and reports
    • Stormwater design guidance manual development
  • Interact with clients, grant administrators, partners, and contractors
  • Provide quality assurance for grant‑funded and consulting projects
  • Support local governments with stormwater management program development
  • Develop proposal scopes of work and budgets

The ideal candidate will combine strong project management skills with the technical expertise and desire to contribute directly as a team member on technical tasks.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, environmental science, water resources, or a related field
  • Strong writing and speaking skills with the ability to translate technical concepts into accessible language
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Knowledge of stormwater regulations and design standards (urban and/or agricultural)
  • Stormwater BMP and Green Infrastructure planning and design
  • Watershed plan development/implementation
  • Flood resiliency and mitigation planning
  • NPDES MS4 permitting and program development
  • CAD (Autodesk Civil 3D) and GIS (ArcGIS Pro/Online) proficiency
  • Familiarity with modeling software (HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS, PC‑SWMM)
  • Experience working with local or state governments
  • Facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Experience leading meetings and engaging diverse audiences (elected officials, technical staff, residents)
  • Project management
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Grant administration and grant reporting
  • Proposal development and budgeting
  • Professional Engineer licensure required for the Water Resources Engineer (not for the Water Resources Professional)
Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary range: $60,000–$100,000, based on education and experience
