Associate Electrical Engineer

This full‑journey class requires registration and is typically filled by promotion from Assistant Electrical Engineer or by outside candidates with advanced professional electrical engineering experience. The Associate Electrical Engineer works under general supervision and is expected to complete complex assignments that require judgment, initiative, and solution‑oriented design. Independence and a higher level of complexity distinguish this class from the Assistant level.

Position Overview

The Associate Electrical Engineer supports the Senior Engineer and may manage small to medium‑sized projects. The role is located in Sacramento and can involve intermittent remote work with the requirement to reside within the Sacramento region or be able to report to the City of Sacramento worksite on short notice. This position supports the Architectural and Engineering (A&E) section of the Division of Facilities and Real Property Management in the Department of Public Works, focusing on the maintenance of existing buildings and the construction of new buildings.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and assist in the preparation of plans and specifications for water utility, street, storm drain, sanitary sewer pump stations, street lighting, traffic signals, buildings, and related public works and city building projects.
  • Assign design, drafting, and inspection tasks to technical subordinates; review work and assist in solving difficult problems.
  • Research building codes, publications, and industry information.
  • Develop and revise design and construction standards.
  • Participate in the execution of traffic and transportation engineering programs; prepare related plans and reports.
  • Assist in the City’s Building Code Compliance program.
  • Investigate field problems affecting property owners, contractors, and maintenance operations.
  • Order survey, mapping, and data collection as needed.
  • Prepare estimates and feasibility reports for new or modified services and structures.
  • Administer contracts for construction projects.
  • Check building plans for compliance with City building codes and ordinances.
  • Prepare special engineering studies and reports.
  • Serve as staff to City commissions, boards, and committees on public works, utility matters, or building code appeals.
  • Coordinate planning, design, and construction activities with other City departments and outside agencies.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate lower‑level professionals, technicians, and clerical staff as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • One year of professional electrical engineering work experience (Assist. level) or two years (Associate level).
  • Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certificate; proof of education and EIT status must be verifiable.
  • City engineering policies, procedures, and supervision principles (Associate level).
  • Technical writing skills and a strong understanding of construction practices.
  • Experience demonstrating electrical system design for a variety of building types, including police facilities, fire stations, and commercial office buildings.
  • Ability to collaborate with mechanical, structural, and architectural consultants and contractors.
License or Certificate

Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California is required. Proof of the required certificate and/or license must be submitted with the application and will be required at the time of appointment.

Probationary Period

Employees must successfully complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level before gaining permanent status.
