Job DescriptionOur work on Operational Safety is to support clients with mitigation of risk to people’s life arising from the operation of plant or equipment or the provision of a service or asset for use. We look at how that risk changes over time, especially through interventions like equipment changes and process adjustments.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with other specialists across WSP, on commissions ranging from short‑term advisory projects to long‑term multi‑disciplinary engineering design schemes.
A typical week will include:
- Providing expert advice to clients to support their objectives.
- Collaborating with specialists to deliver safety risk assessments, operating procedures, policy and major projects.
- Presenting findings and recommendations to client forums and industry stakeholders.
- Engaging with stakeholders such as emergency services, operational staff, highway authorities.
- Leading technical packages of work in terms of time, cost and quality, ensuring client satisfaction.
- Supporting the growth of the Operational Safety capability, fostering early‑career professionals.
- Experience preparing and/or reviewing safety risk assessments, particularly in the transport domain.
- A degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g., civil engineering, transport studies, geography) or a qualified technician with BTEC, HNC/HND and appropriate experience.
- A passion for systematic safety integration (e.g., Safe System approach & Vision Zero).
- A proven track record in a consultancy role or ability to demonstrate the aptitude to provide excellent consultancy support.
- Excellent verbal & written communication skills, and the ability to undertake qualitative & quantitative data analysis.
- A conscientious, detail‑oriented approach able to work independently.
- Excellent stakeholder relationship & collaboration skills.
- Experience contributing to or developing client proposals.
