What we do:

Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year, can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it’s so much more than this.

We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire’s water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region, and play a key role in the region’s health, wellbeing, and prosperity.

New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment and changing expectations from customers means that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry. Our People team are a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators.

Where you fit in:
  • Storm Overflow Programme- the purpose is to reduce the number of sewage spills into the environment through delivery of capital projects either at sewage treatment works or in the sewer network. Yorkshire Water are investing £1.5bn between 2025 and 2030 to upgrade our infrastructure to reduce discharges from storm overflows and improve our environmental performance. Our Project Manager teams are critical in helping us deliver this target successfully.
  • Water Industry National Environmental Programme- A large regulatory framework set out by Ofwat, The Environment Agency and DEFRA that all Water Companies including Yorkshire Water are participating in. Projects related to the framework include plans to reduce phosphorus discharge into water courses, enhance river water quality, improvements to bathing water quality on the East Coast and Replacement of more than 200km of water mains, as part of 1,085km of main replacement over the next five years.
  • Bioresources- projects that oversee taking partially treated sewage and generating renewable energy and quality products that go to agriculture, thereby creating value from waste. The bioresources market is estimated to be worth up to £1.6bn in the UK, and Yorkshire Water currently spends around 8% of its annual operating costs treating sludge.
