About

The Role

The Substation Civil Engineer is responsible for planning, design, and analysis of substation infrastructure, including foundations, site grading, drainage, and structural components. This position requires strong technical skills in civil and structural engineering, along with the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality design solutions. The engineer will collaborate with project teams, clients, and regulatory bodies to deliver high‑quality engineering solutions.

Areas of focus include substations/switchyards for Wind, Solar, Battery Energy Storage, and stand‑alone electrical projects from conception through construction and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work within a multi‑disciplinary team for the conducting of site layouts, grading design, drainage design, drainage reports, foundation design, structure design, and support design of Substation projects.
  • Coordinate design activities to maintain project schedules, budget, and quality requirements to ensure successful project completion.
  • Accountable to provide design activities in accordance with applicable codes and standards (ACI, ASCE, AISC, IEEE, NEC, NESC, etc.) and UUE’s policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control.
  • Prepare and produce drawings, sketches and details for use by technical staff, drafting personnel, clients and contractors.
  • Prepare input data for computerized solutions to engineering problems and utilize computers for input and output of data and execution of stored programs.
  • Write technical reports summarizing site design, drainage designs, and structural designs.
  • Review topographic surveys, geotechnical reports and vendor drawings for constructability and compliance; perform supporting calculations as required.
  • Support stormwater permitting, erosion control plans, and related documentation as required.
  • Deliver accurate, constructible designs that meet industry standards, client specifications, and good engineering practice.
  • Assist in the preparation of progress reports, compliance documentation and record‑keeping of substation technical documents and drawings.
  • Provide construction‑phase support including RFI responses, submittal review, and field observation as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Key Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an ABET‑accredited program is required. Registration as an Engineer‑in‑training (EIT) or FE is required. Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred.
  • A minimum of two (3) years of relevant civil engineering experience in substation, utility, renewable energy, or related infrastructure projects is required.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience is preferred for the Engineer III classification.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Collaborate with a team of engineering professionals.
  • Capable of reading and interpreting technical documents, drawings, and prints.
  • Able to follow technical directions from senior staff and technical personnel, as may be required.
  • Prepare input data for computerized solutions to engineering problems.
  • May serve as civil discipline lead on small to mid‑size substation projects (Engineer III).
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers (Engineer III).
